When you're looking for serious offshore action in Miami, Captain Alek and the Bear Cut Bandit crew know how to put you on fish. This 6-hour morning trip takes you out into the deep blue waters beyond Miami Beach Haulover and Biscayne Bay, where king mackerel patrol the reefs and snappers stack up on the bottom. Starting at first light, you'll be working proven spots that locals have been hitting for decades – the kind of places that separate the weekend warriors from the real deal.
Your day kicks off early at Miami Beach Haulover, where Captain Alek will have the boat prepped and ready to roll. The trip accommodates up to 6 anglers, so you're not dealing with a cattle boat situation – just you, your crew, and plenty of room to work. After a scenic cruise down the Miami River to grab fresh bait, you'll head offshore to target the structure and reefs where the big boys hang out. The morning bite is prime time for kings and grouper, and Captain Alek's got the local knowledge to put you on productive water fast. Don't worry about bringing tackle – everything you need is on board, from bottom rigs to trolling gear.
This isn't a one-trick pony operation. Captain Alek switches up tactics based on what's biting and where the fish are holding. You'll start with trolling spreads to cover water and locate active schools of kings and mahi. Once fish are marked, it's time to break out the jigs and work the water column. For the grouper and snapper bite, you'll drop baits to the bottom and work structure that's been producing for years. Live bait is often the ticket, especially for those bigger king mackerel that cruise the reef edges. The center console setup gives everyone room to work, whether you're fighting a fish or helping a buddy land one.
"My son and I headed out for a fish with Bearcutbandit charters today. The weather wasn't kind but Alek still put us on some some awesome fish and we had a killer day! If you're in Miami, make sure you look Bearcutbandit charters up and get out for a fish with Alek 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼" - Stewart. "Outstanding trip with my 13 year old son. We caught a few nice fat snappers, then went hunting for mahi and found a nice school! Kept 6 mahi and 3 snappers. Couldn't have been a better experience! Knowledgeable guide, independent operator, born & raised in these waters. He really knows how to put you on the fish! Filleted them perfectly for us as well (and I'm a Chef, pretty picky about that stuff). We will be back for sure!" - Jon. "Great trip and Capt. Alek knows secrets! We started at 0700 with a trip down the beautiful Miami River. Picked up some live bait from a buddy of the Captain's outside Treasure Island. The Captain then put us on a spot that produced 30+ yellowtail snapper, 3 mackerel (1 keeper), and a bonita. We got a minimum of one bite per bait. Sometimes multiple bites per bait. Using mid-range spinning gear, it was non-stop action. Really, a perfect way to spend any morning. The Captain has a gorgeous center console that is perfect with this kind of trip. He is cordial, experienced, attentive, and focused on you having tight lines. We talked about many other fishing opportunities there in the Miami area and Capt. Alek would definitely be our go-to guy for exploring them. Highly recommend." - Karl.
King Mackerel are the crown jewel of Miami's offshore scene, and these silver rockets provide some of the best fights you'll find in South Florida waters. Kings typically run 10-40 pounds around Miami, with the occasional smoker pushing 50 plus. They're most active during the cooler months from October through March, but you can find them year-round if you know where to look. These fish love structure and baitfish, making them perfect targets for both trolling and live bait fishing. When a king hits, you'll know it – they make blistering runs and aerial displays that'll test your drag and your nerves.
Grey Snapper, also known as mangrove snapper, are one of the most consistent biters in Miami's offshore waters. These bronze-backed fighters typically range from 12-18 inches, but the bigger ones can push 5-6 pounds and provide serious rod-bending action. They're structure-oriented fish that love wrecks, reefs, and ledges, making them perfect targets for bottom fishing. Grey snapper are active year-round, but the bite really heats up during the warmer months when they move offshore to spawn. They're also fantastic table fare – firm, white meat that's perfect for the grill or frying pan.
Gag Grouper are the heavyweight champions of the reef, and landing one is a real accomplishment. These bottom-dwellers can weigh anywhere from 5-30 pounds, with the big gags providing arm-burning fights from the depths. They're most active during the cooler months and love hard bottom structure and ledges. Gags are ambush predators that inhale baits quickly, so you need to set the hook fast and keep them away from their rocky homes. The reward is some of the best-eating fish in the ocean – thick, flaky fillets that are prized by chefs and home cooks alike.
Red Grouper are another prized bottom fish that call Miami's reefs home. These copper-colored fighters typically run smaller than g

My 9 year old and I went out with Captain Alek and we caught fish in both the ocean and intercoastal. I really appreciated the time Alek gave to my 9 year old in helping him fish and be part of the fishing experience. Within 45 minutes of being out on the ocean reef we caught 2 king mackerel and then headed in for different fish. The 6 hours flew by as we had fun fishing and sight seeing. My 9 year old wanted to stay out longer and wants me to book another trip with Captain Alek. Highly recommend Captain Alek!

Gag Grouper are solid fighters that'll test your gear once hooked. These guys typically run 20 inches and a few pounds, but we've seen some push 30+ pounds in deeper water. They love hanging around rocky structure, ledges, and wrecks from 30-200 feet deep. Spring through fall gives you the best shot at them when they're actively feeding. What makes them special is that stubborn fight - they'll try to drag your bait straight back to the rocks. The meat is excellent eating with firm, white flakes. Pro tip: once you hook one, keep your drag locked tight and don't give them any slack. They'll dive for cover fast, so you need to muscle them up and away from structure right away.

Grey Snapper, also called Mangrove Snapper, are smart fish that'll keep you on your toes. Most run 1-3 pounds inshore, but open water fish can hit 10+ pounds. They're opportunistic feeders that love structure - docks, mangroves, rocky bottom, and artificial reefs. Best action happens at night or dawn/dusk when they're actively hunting. What makes them popular is their excellent white, flaky meat and the challenge of outsmarting them. These fish are picky and will test your patience. The key is keeping your bait still once it hits bottom - no fancy movements. Hook a live shrimp through the tail, let it sink down, then barely lift it off the bottom. Too much motion spooks them every time.

King Mackerel are pure speed demons that'll rip line off your reel in seconds. Most fish run 10-30 pounds, but 40+ pounders aren't uncommon in deeper water. They cruise 40-150 feet deep, often following baitfish schools along temperature breaks and structure. Spring through fall offers the best action when they're migrating through our waters. What makes them special is that blazing fast run when hooked - few fish can match their initial burst. The fight is spectacular, with long runs and acrobatic jumps. Here's what works: troll with live bait on a wire leader using two hooks - one in the nose, one trailing. Kings often bite the tail section first, so that back hook is crucial for a solid hookup.

Red Grouper are tough fighters with some of the best-tasting meat you'll find. Most average 5-10 pounds, but we catch them up to 20+ pounds on the right structure. They prefer muddy and rocky bottoms from 15-300 feet, often around ledges and wrecks. Year-round fishing is good, but avoid January through April during spawn closure. What guests love is the aggressive strike and that firm, flaky meat with a slight shellfish taste from their crab and shrimp diet. These fish hit hard and fight all the way to the boat. My go-to tip: use fresh shrimp or crab for bait and be ready to set the hook fast. Once they grab it, they'll try to get back to the rocks, so keep steady pressure and don't let them run.

Scamp Grouper are hands down the best eating fish in the grouper family - that's why we call them "Captain's Meat." Most run 4-6 pounds and under three feet, but don't let the size fool you. These slow but strong swimmers will give you a real workout once hooked. They hang out around 75-300 feet deep near reefs, ledges, and wrecks, but move shallower during spawn season from February to May. The chocolate brown color with those distinctive elongated tail rays makes them easy to spot. What guests love is the combination of a solid fight and incredible table fare. Here's the trick: use heavy braided line because you'll need to pull them straight up from the bottom before they can get back to their holes.
